Course Description
ESL 6B is an advanced course in critical reading and vocabulary skills tailored for the English-as-a-Second Language student. The emphasis is on critical reading and vocabulary development |
Prerequisite
Completion of ESL 5B, with a final grade of C or better, or appropriate placement level demonstrated through ESL assessment. |
Institutional Learning Outcomes
“A. Critical Thinking: Analyze problems by differentiating fact from opinions, using evidence and using sound reasoning to specify multiple solutions and their consequences…” Students will analyze differing viewpoints of controversial topics in order to form their own opinion and express them in writing assignments and class discussion. “G. Cultural Diversity: Respectfully engage with other cultures in an effort to understand them…” Through class discussions and written assignments, students will analyze readings from a multi-cultural perspective. |

Outcomes and Exit Criteria
1. Analyze and think critically about readings and their usefulness. 2. Students will synthesize multiple sources. 3. Summarize using paraphrasing and condensing information. 4. Analyze and validate facts and differentiate fact from opinion. 5. Produce vocabulary and word forms based on context. 6. Compare and contrast fictional and non-fictional text. 7. Write reports and summaries with valid evidence. 8. Employ research techniques both in the library and on the internet. 9. Work independently and work in cohorts of pairs and small groups to establish personal responsibility and academic partnerships.

Attendance Policy
This class meets 90 minutes a day, two days a week and the final class meeting is May 27, 2008. There are thirty-one (31) class meetings for a total of forty-six and a half (46.5) hours. Attendance and participation in class are taken into account in the final grade. For this reason, please make every effort to be present and punctual for all class meetings. Your grade for the class will be jeopardized if you are absent for more than ten percent (10%) of class meetings. In other words you may be absent for four and a half (4.5) hours during the semester with no consequences. Your overall class grade will be affected if you miss more than three (3) class meetings in their entirety.

General Notes
Please turn off cell phones or pagers during class. Please refrain from bringing children to class. Please refrain from eating in the classroom. If you wish to drop the class, it is your responsibility to go to registration to do this officially. If you don’t do this, you risk an “F” for the course. Please let the instructor know if you need to drop the course. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out the assignment from a classmate and to arrange to turn in your homework when it is due. Please exchange email addresses or telephone numbers with a classmate to stay current with assignments and activities.
