Psychology 67 Syllabus Counseling Techniques for the Chemically Addicted Psychology West Los Angeles College, Spring 2008 Instructor: Gayle Byock, MBA, Clinical Psychology MA, MFT; PhD expected 2008 Prerequisite: Psychology 64 and 65. This 3-unit course emphasizes counseling techniques for the chemically addicted. Major elements include ethics and confidentiality, interview and assessment techniques, observation and listening skills, dual diagnosis, crisis intervention, and documentation processes. You will be creating a fictitious client for whom you will be writing up the history, treatment plan, personal recovery/aftercare plan, and discharge summary. Assignments: 1. Due Week 3 (Feb. 21). Counselors sometimes have co-dependency issues. Attend a 12-step co-dependency (CODA) meeting and write about how co-dependency might affect your counseling (1-2 pages). For meeting schedules, go to http://www.lacoda.org/. Before you go to the meeting, read the 12 Promises on the CODA website and CODA step one to note difference with other 12 step programs. Work On These Early. They Are Coordinated With Each Other 2. Due Week 11 (April 17) Write up a sample fictitious History & Treatment Plan using Appendix 8 as a partial guide. 4. Due Week 14 (May 8) Write up a sample fictitious Personal Recovery Plan using Appendix 28 as a partial guide. 5. Due Week 16 (May 22).
