Course Description
| ESL 6B Reading and Vocabulary is an advanced course in reading skills and systematic vocabulary building, with an emphasis on academic material. |
Course Prerequisites
| The course prerequisite is fulfilled either by level placement by the ESL assessment or completion of ESL 5B with a “C” or better. |

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will have the following exit skills, being able to: - Identify and understand main ideas and supporting details
- Summarize assigned readings in writing
- Recognize differences and similarities between fictional and non-fictional texts
- Distinguish factual evidence from opinion, using references and research
- Develop strategies for dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary including: o Using context to determine meaning
o Using prefixes and suffixes to determine meaning - Use new vocabulary correctly in spoken and written course work
- Work effectively with fellow classmates in pairs and groups

Institutional Student Learning Outcomes: ESL 6B will help students meet the following Institutional SLOs
A. Critical Thinking: Analyze problems by differentiating fact from opinions, using evidence, and using sound reasoning to specify multiple solutions and their consequences. • Students will analyze differing viewpoints of controversial topics in order to form their own opinion and express them inwriting assignments and class discussion. G. Cultural Diversity: Respectfully engage with other cultures in an effort to understand them. • Students will analyze readings from a multi-cultural perspective while engaging in class discussions and written assignments.

Attendance and Participation: 25% Quizzes: 5% Assignments and Homework: 35% Midterm: 15% Final Exam: 20% |
Homework & Assignments
| Students will be assigned individual and pair assignments and homework throughout the course regarding the reading. These will include library and Internet research, character interviewing, role-play and mini-presentations. More information will be given regarding each assignment as the semester progresses. |
Attendance and Late Assignments
| Students are expected to attend the class regularly. More than three absences will result in a deduction of your final grade. Quizzes cannot be made up and assignments must be turned in on time. Please speak with me if you have any questions or a particular situation. |
Class Requirements
- Plagiarism and cheating are not allowed and will result in a 0% for that test/assignment.
- The final exam must be taken on the day scheduled during finals week.
- Please turn off cell phones while in class.
- Please do not eat or drink in the classroom.
