Course Description

ESL 8 is a course in written composition and critical reading skills tailored for the English-as-a-second language student. It is a prerequisite for English 101. The emphasis is on writing based primarily on critical reading. Advanced grammar skills are emphasized throughout each lesson.

Prerequisites

Completion of ESL 6A, or English 21 with a grade of “C” or better, or placement through the ESL assessment process.

Homework Policy

Homework assignments are due on the date listed. Late assignments are accepted but a loss of points on that assignment will occur due to the missed due date. Missed essays and exams may be re-scheduled after meeting with the instructor.

Students must follow the Los Angeles Community College District Standards of Student Conduct regarding plagiarism and cheating. Please be aware that students found cheating will be reported according to LACCD Student Discipline Procedures.

ESL 8 Student Learning Outcomes

1. 

Communicate in a variety of writer forms with purpose, meaning, and grammarical corrections. 

2.As a skilled reader, comprehend and analyze a variety of passages and content to construct meaning.
3.Work effectively with persons of different cultures, heritage, gender and age.

ESL 8 Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the student will have the following skills:

  
1.Employ useful pre-writing techniques such as choosing and narrowing a topic; considering purpose, audience, and point-of-view; and discovering ideas to write about. 
2.Compose effective thesis statements and incorporate appropriate supporting evidence in their essay assignments. 
3.Demonstrate their knowledge of the structure of an essay through writing strong introductions; choosing an appropriate organizational method for body paragraphs; writing solid body paragraphs; and writing and effective conclusion. 
4.Revise their writing assignments through re-examination of their own work as well as through teacher and peer feedback. 
5.On the sentence level, analyze their conciseness, variety, and parellelism. In word choise, analyze their tone, level of diction, and specificity. 
6.Recognize patterns of development including narration, cause and effect, classification and definition, process analysis, and argumentation, and utilize them in their essay assignments. 
7.Locate, use and document library and Internet sources in research paper assignments. Analyze and think critically about the validity and usefulness of their sources and synthesis multiple sources. 
8.Recognize the elements of literature such as similes, metaphors, personification, and irony. Discuss and anaylze setting, charachters, point-of-view, plot, and theme. 
9.Demonstrate correct punctuation, grammar usage, and mechanics in their writing assignments.
