Course Description | ESL 8 is a course in written composition and critical reading skills tailored for the English-as-a-second language student. It is a prerequisite for English 101. The emphasis is on writing based primarily on critical reading. | ESL 8 Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course the student will have the following skills: | | | | 1. | Employ useful pre-writing techniques such as choosing and narrowing a topic; considering purpose, audience, and point-of-view; and discovering ideas to write about. | | 2. | Compose effective thesis statements and incorporate appropriate supporting evidence in their essay assignments. | | 3. | Demonstrate their knowledge of the structure of an essay through writing strong introductions; choosing an appropriate organizational method for body paragraphs; writing solid body paragraphs; and writing and effective conclusion. | | 4. | Revise their writing assignments through re-examination of their own work as well as through teacher and peer feedback. | | 5. | On the sentence level, analyze their conciseness, variety, and parellelism. In word choise, analyze their tone, level of diction, and specificity. | | 6. | Recognize patterns of development including narration, cause and effect, classification and definition, process analysis, and argumentation, and utilize them in their essay assignments. | | 7. | Locate, use and document library and Internet sources in research paper assignments.
